The Nobel Prize awarded to Han Kang has put Korean literature in the international spotlight. This recognition that would not have been possible without translations. But can we consider Korean literature as part of universal literature? Do the translations into Spanish and Catalan help us to fully understand it? How great is the challenge of translating Korean literature? This seminar on the circulation, reception, and translation of Korean literature in the global context addresses these questions from complementary perspectives.
In the first round table, the researchers Ester Torres-Simón and Diana Roig, in dialogue with the literary agent and writer Lee Hong, present the changing landscape of Korean literature in translation, the role of subsidies and translator training, and the questions that persist about the concept of universal literature. In the second, Mihwa Jo Jeong and Álvaro Trigo, translators of Kim Ae-ran into Catalan and Spanish, respectively, share their experiences, difficulties and solutions, as well as reflections on the relationship between translator and author, and how they experienced the Nobel Prize win, in a conversation moderated by Matilde Martínez, an editor at Godall Edicions.
