Born in Barcelona, Gemma Lienas studied Philosophy and Letters at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and worked in the field of psychology and special education, which had an impact on the subject matter of her later work. She worked as a teacher of language and literature in regular education, and in the 1980s, she entered the publishing world and began writing. She is the author of novels, essays, children’s literature and, above all, young adult literature. Significant among her work is her first novel, Cul de sac [Dead End] (Estrella Polar, 2010), which achieved great success in sales and has been translated internationally, as well as El diari lila de la Carlota [Carlota’s Purple Diary] (La Butxaca, 2015), where she introduces the metaphor of “purple glasses”, which spread through feminist circles.

Lienas has been recognized with awards such as the Ramon Llull Prize (2003), the UNESCO Honourable Mention (2003), the President Macià Work Medal (2010) for her role in Catalan literature in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and for her feminist activism, and the CEDRO Award (2024) for her career and her defence of authors’ rights. She has also served as a member of the Catalan Parliament with ICV (2015-2017) and with the PSC (2021-2024).
