Mònica Batet

Catalan writer, philologist and editor, she is one of the most unique voices in contemporary Catalan literature, recognized for her narrative rife with symbolism that explores memory, identity, and resistance.

Born in El Pont d’Armentera, Mònica Batet earned a degree in Catalan Philology from the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV). She is the author of the novels L’habitació grisa [The Grey Room] (Empúries, 2006); Nou illes al nord [Nine Islands in the North] (Més Llibres, 2019), which won the Nollegiu Prize; and Una història és una pedra llançada al riu [A Story Is a Stone Tossed in the River] (Angle Editorial, 2023), which won the Crexells Award, a work that argues for the value of folklore and folk tales as tools for cultural resistance in a country subjected to authoritarianism.

She is a collaborator with literary magazines such as Paper de Vidre [Sandpaper] and she is the author of the book El lector ideal  [The Ideal Reader] (Petròpolis, 2010), a collection of her articles on literature. She has also published various short stories that have been included in collections such as 24 contes al dia [24 Stories a Day] (Godall Edicions, 2018), among others. Batet is also the founder and director of the publishing house Nits Blanques, which has published authors such as Cristina Sandu, Herbjørg Wassmo, Helle Helle, and Gunnhild Øyehaug. She currently works as a Catalan professor for the Language Service at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili.
