Samuel Beckett, the celebrated author of Waiting for Godot, made just one work for the cinema: a chase involving the camera and the pursued image, with existential dread embedded in the very apparatus of the film. The link to the essence of the cinema is evident in the casting, as the object chased is none other than an aging Buster Keaton, who was understandably befuddled at Beckett and director Alan Schneider’s imperative that he keep his face hidden from the camera’s gaze.
