In her work, the writer Maggie O’Farrell has always shown a particular way of looking at death and loss, which becomes a vital, courageous cry. She has done this once again with her most recent book Hamnet (Hamnet – L’Altra Editorial / Libros del Asteroide), a dazzling novel that reveals what and who might have been behind Hamlet, the most famous tragedy of all times. In this work, O’Farrell has been able to demonstrate that the pain of the prince of Denmark is the pain of a father, of Shakespeare himself, who is unable to bear the loss of a son. And this selfsame talent is capable of making us forget about Shakespeare and bringing to the fore a much more extraordinary character, namely Agnes, the mother of the child, a woman full of humanity who still has the powers of nature in her hands. In this session, one of the United Kingdom’s most acclaimed writers will speak with Gemma Ruiz Palà and Begoña Gómez Urzaiz about her immersion in Elizabethan theatre, the misogyny of biographers, and her discovery of the world of natural knowledge to the point of becoming a veritable healer.

In this session the audiovisual piece Care, with a text by Lisa Appignanesi and images by Neus Ballús, will be premiered. This work is part of the project A Vocabulary for the Future.

Maggie O’Farrell will participate by videoconference.

This session will also be streamed through the CCCB website.
