Three of the most prominent Basque women authors, Uxue Alberdi, Miren Amuriza and Nerea Ibarzabal, visit us to share their other passion: bertsolaritza. This centuries-old tradition, oral and improvised, is a true mass phenomenon in the Basque Country; and, in this event, it centres on the most pressing question of all: How can we imagine more habitable futures?
Through improvised verses, the three bertsolaris invite us to speculate as a group, to create alternative worlds, and try out revolutionary realities. The experiment is based on the book Borradores del futuro [Sketches of the Future] (Consonni, 2023), a collection of stories in which authors such as Katixa Agirre, Harkaitz Cano, and Belén Gopegui imagine social, cultural, and emotional alternatives. At Kosmopolis, this writing becomes a living word, in the only performance of this speculative tour of bertsolaritza outside the Basque Country.
