Nightmare or Future: New Korean Dystopias
Born in Seoul, Choi Jin-Young studied literature at Duksung Women’s University, where she began writing poetry. After graduating, she began her career as a writer of fiction while teaching literature at a secondary school. Her style is simple and restrained, driven by an interest in enjoying the writing process and a desire for her message to be able to reach everyone. The main characters in her work are often young people who are living in poverty and facing violence, and struggling to combat and overcome those issues, as part of a portrayal of the contradictions and challenges of today’s Korean society.
In 2006, she won the Silcheon Prize; since then she has won other prizes, including the Shin Dong-yup and the Manhae. Her first work translated into Spanish is Hacia donde se pone el sol [To the Warm Horizon] (Shiro, 2025), a dystopia where, in a world torn apart and dehumanized due to a lethal virus, two very different women fall in love.
