Denise Duncan

Actress, playwright, and theatre director

Denise Duncan is an actress, playwright, director, screenwriter and writing teacher. As a director and playwright, she has premiered a score of works in Spain, Costa Rica and the United States, including Está linda la mar (Best Show Award of Barcelona Theatre Festival in 2012), Negrata de merda (2019) and El combat del segle (2020).

Duncan has a degree in Direction and Dramaturgy (Institut del Teatre, Barcelona, 2012), Dramatic Arts (2004) and Journalism (University of Costa Rica, 2004). She also has a postgraduate degree in Social Media Content: Community Manager and Content Curation (2017) and a master’s degree in Theatre and Audiovisual Studies (University of A Coruña, 2004). She has won prizes such as Runner-up in the 2005 Marqués de Bradomín Theatre Text Award; the Premi Ciutat de Manacor Theatre Award and 2018 Jaume Vidal Alcover.

She was creator of the 7th Theatre Writing Laboratory of the Fundació SGAE 2019, and Sala Beckett resident author (Barcelona 2019-2020). She is the founder member of La Pulpe Teatre, with which she is currently in residence at the Teatre Tantarantana (El Cicló, 2019-2021), founder member of the Col·lectiu Tinta Negra and member of the Advisory Board of Acotacions magazine (RESAD, 2020-present).
