Javier Mariscal is a designer and artist. Recognized for his colourful and playful style, he has worked in fields such as graphic design, interior design, and animation. His career began in the 1970s with comic strips in fanzines, and he revolutionized Spanish comics with the characters in the comic strip series Los Garriris (1974). He is the author of the well-known logo “Bar cel ona” (1979) and creator of the mascot for the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games, Cobi. He has designed several covers for the New Yorker and has worked with a wide range of publishers and brands, including Onda Cero, the Barcelona Zoo, the 32nd Copa América and H&M. With Fernando Trueba, he directed the animated film Chico y Rita (2010), which earned an Oscar nomination, and Dispararon al pianista [They Shot the Piano Player] (2023). His work has been exhibited in spaces such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Design Museum in London, and La Pedrera, among others, and it is included in the collections at MOMA, the Barcelona Design Museum, the MNAC and the MACBA. He is a recipient of the National Design Award (1999) and an honorary member of the Royal Design Industry.
