Juan Pablo Villalobos

A Mexican writer residing in Barcelona, he is one of the most original voices in contemporary Latin American fiction.

Juan Pablo Villalobos (Guadalajara, 1973) grew up in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, and has lived in Barcelona since 2003, with a break in Brazil between 2011 and 2014. With a degree in Marketing and Hispanic Language and Literature from the University of Veracruz, and with studies in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, he has built a career characterized by using dark humour, irony, and the absurd as tools for approaching reality.

His novels, translated into more than 15 languages, have established him as one of the most original voices in contemporary Latin American fiction. His books include Down the Rabbit Hole (2011), Quesadillas (2013), I’ll Sell You a Dog (2016), I Don’t Expect Anyone to Believe Me (2017, winner of the Herralde Prize for Novel), Invasion of the Spirit People (2020), Peluquería y letras [Hairdressing and Writing] (2022) and El pasado anda atrás de nosotros [The Past Is Following Us] (2024). He is also the author of the essay The Other Side (2019) about the stories of Central American children who emigrated to the United States.
