László Krasznahorkai studied law and literature in Hungary, and wrote his thesis on the life and work of the writer Sándor Márai in the wake of his flight from the communist regime. Upon finishing his studies, he began his career as a freelance writer, creating works characterized by a deep existential exploration and labyrinthine prose.

Notable among his works are The Melancholy of Resistance (New Directions, 1998), his first work available to readers in Spanish (Acantilado, 2001), set in a totalitarian world where intelligence is neutralized by brute force, and Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming (New Directions, 2019), his most recent publication in Spanish. Some of his works have been adapted for the big screen by the Hungarian filmmaker Béla Tarr.  Throughout his career he has been awarded several international prizes, including the Man Booker Prize (2015) and the Formentor Prize for Literature (2024).
