Comics became literature
A storywriter and illustrator, he has published some 30 comics, including Comecocometrón (1994), Bardín baila con la más fea [Bardín Dances with the Ugliest Girl] (2000), La biblioteca de Turpín [Turpín’s Library] (2006) and Bardín el Superrealista [Bardín the Super-realist] (2006). His stories are remarkable for their humorous, ironic, and surreal style, and for the creation of iconic characters, such as Gustavo, Peter Pank, most recently, Bardín, influenced by the style of Chris Ware.
As an illustrator he has created posters, the covers for books and CDs, illustrations for the press and for children’s books. His most important work includes the design of covers for The New Yorker, the design of a Swatch watch (1997), and the creation of the mascot for the centennial of Futbol Club Barcelona (1998). He is the co-founder of one of the first fanzines in Spain, El Rrollo enmascarado (1973), along with other great illustrators, and the avant-garde graphic magazine Nosotros Somos Los Muertos [We Are the Dead] (1993-2007).
During his career, he has won numerous prizes, such as the National Comic Award (2007), the Grand Prize from Comic Barcelona (2000) and, most recently, the Finestres Award for Comics in Catalan for the work Què [What] (Editorial Finestres, 2022).
Since 2014, he has published the weekly strip “Trampantojo” [Mirage] in Babelia, a cultural supplement for the newspaper El País.
