Evening of poetry and music with Yolanda Castaño, Ismael Ramos and Mercedes Peón
Mercedes Peón is a Galician composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. At the age of 13, she discovered traditional Galician music through the pandereteiras from Costa da Morte, and she was fascinated by the songs, dances, and stories of the Galician people. This oral tradition and sonic heritage form the foundation of her musical training. Her first album, Isué (2000), a festive and energetic contemporary work, reflects what she defines as “music for cultural self-esteem”, notable for its recognition of the local popular tradition. With her following albums, Ajrú (2004), Sihá (2007), and Sós (2011), she has consolidated a unique artistic language that blends vocals, electronics, and collective memory.
Deixaas (2018), her latest work, transports us to a contemporary universe through recordings of heavy machinery collected in shipyards and industrial spaces around Ferrol, and it incorporates dramatized poetry and atmospheric piano. The work explores themes like identity, gender, belonging, our relationship with the environment, and the current sociopolitical dynamics. Recognized nationally and internationally, Peón has been awarded the Macallan Trophy for bagpipers, the first woman to receive the award, the National Music Award of Galicia, and the award for best album from WorldChart Music Europe.
