Pere Comellas

Catalan linguist, professor, and writer. As a translator, he is the author of the Catalan translations of works by important Portuguese authors such as José Eduardo Agualusa and Mia Couto.

Pere Comellas is a professor of Portuguese Studies at the University of Barcelona, where he teaches a course in Translation and Comparative Literature for the Master’s degree in Literary Theory and is a member of the Endangered Languages Study Group and the University Centre for Sociolinguistics and Communication. He has translated numerous literary works by authors including Baltasar Lopes (Giovanni Pontiero Award 2005), Mia Couto (Giovanni Pontiero Award 2017), José Eduardo Agualusa (PEN Award 2018), Martha Batalha, Alberto Mussa, Bernardo Kucinski, Dulce Maria Cardoso, José Maria Eça de Queirós, Teresa Moure, Gonçalo Tavares, and Moacyr Scliar. He is the author of Contra l’imperialisme lingüístic [Against Linguistic Imperialism] (La Campana 2006). He recently published, together with M. Carme Junyent, Els colors de la neu: les llengües, les persones i el món [The Colors of Snow: Languages, People, and the World] (Eumo 2021).
