Behind the Cover of 'The New Yorker'
Sergio García studied Fine Arts at the University of Granada, where he is currently a full professor. As a visual artist, cartoonist, and illustrator, he has created covers and pieces for media such as El País, The New Yorker, and The New York Times and for publishing houses such as Dargaud, Dupuis, Toon Books, Norma Editorial, and Editorial Santillana, among many others. His notable projects include the graphic novel El cielo en la cabeza [The Sky in Your Head] (Norma, 2023), created together with Antonio Altarriba and Lola Moral, and the illustrations for the book Lost in NYC: A Subway Adventure (Toon Books, 2015) written by Nadja Spiegelman.
His work is characterized by visual compositions full of symbols and metaphors, inspired by great names in painting such as Picasso, Botticelli and Velázquez, and by the use of graphic resources such as multi-linear narration, for example. Sergio García has been recognized internationally with awards from The Society of Illustrators and American Illustration, among many other awards. He has also participated in numerous exhibitions around the world in places like New York (Society of Illustrators) and Brussels (CBBD00).
