Uxue Alberdi Estibaritz

A writer and bertsolari, she is one of the most prominent figures in the literature and oral culture of the Basque Country, especially for her feminist perspective and social focus.

Uxue Alberdi Estibaritz has participated from a very young age in competitions and events surrounding bertsolaritza, an art of sung poetic improvisation deeply rooted in the Basque Country. She is the author of the essay Reverso. Testimonios de mujeres bertsolaris [Opposite: Testimonies from bertsolari women] (Reikiavik Ediciones, 2021; Susa, 2019 in Basque). In addition to essays, she is also the author of stories, novels, literary chronicles, and children’s literature. She has been awarded the Euskadi Prize for Literature on two occasions, in the children’s and young adult literature category for Besarkada [Embrace] (Elkar, 2015) and in the essay category for Kontrako eztarritik [Opposite] (2020). Her novel Jenisjoplin about female identity and individual freedom (Susa, 2017; consonni, 2020, in Spanish) was awarded the 111 Akademia Prize. Her most recent publication is Hetero (Susa, 2024; consonni, 2025, in Spanish), a book of stories that questions gender roles and heterosexual normativity.
