Nightmare or Future: New Korean Dystopias
A South Korean writer, she explores contemporary alienation with texts midway between realism and speculative fiction. The Disaster Tourist (Serpent’s Tail, 2020), a dystopian eco-thriller that won international awards, is her first work translated into Spanish.

Nightmare or Future: New Korean Dystopias
Born in Seoul, where she currently lives, Yun Ko-eun studied creative writing at Dongguk University and made her debut with the short story Piercing (2004), which won second prize in the Daesan Literary Awards for students. In 2008, she published her first novel, The Zero G Syndrome, which won the 13th Hankyoreh Literary Award, one of the most prestigious prizes in South Korea. She is also the author of three collections of stories: Table for One (2010), Aloha (2014), and The Old Car and Hitchhiker (2016), which demonstrate her singular style, combining dark humour, an overflowing imagination, and a critical look at today’s world.
With The Disaster Tourist, her most recent work, she reflects on the limits of tourism and capitalism, combining terror with the absurd through a travel agency that specializes in places that have suffered natural disasters. The book received the Dagger Award from the UK Crime Writers’ Association in 2021, making her the first Asian author to win it.
