David Trueba

Nationally and internationally acclaimed writer, director and screenwriter with a long professional experience. His work has featured in festivals including Cannes and Málaga, as well as awards ceremonies such as the Goyas and the Oscars.

David Trueba (Madrid, 1969) started out studying journalism. After making his debut as a screenwriter, he studied at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. He has written the scripts for films including Two Much (1995), The Girl of Your Dreams (1998) and the Oscar-nominated documentary Balseros (2002), for which he was also the co-producer. He made his directorial debut with The Good Life (1996), presented in the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes. In 2003 he directed The Soldiers of Salamis, presented in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Festival. In 2013, his film Living Is Easy with Eyes Closed (2013) received six Goya Awards and was selected to represent Spain at the Oscars. His latest release is the film Almost 40, which won him the Special Jury Award at the Malaga Film Festival.

As a writer, he has had five novels published by Anagrama, which have been translated into more than ten languages: Abierto toda la noche (1995), Cuatro Amigos (1999), Learning To Lose (2008) (Spanish National Critics Prize for Best Novel, shortlisted for the prestigious Médicis Prize and Novel of the Year by El Cultural supplement of the newspaper El Mundo), Blitz (2015) and Tierra de campos (2017) (Booksellers’ Recommendation Prize awarded by the Spanish Confederation of Booksellers’ Guilds and Associations, Madrid Critics Prize for best novel and shortlisted work for the San Clemente Rosalía-Abanca Prize, awarded by readers from secondary schools).
