Wells (The Time Machine, 1895; The Island of Dr. Moreau, 1896; The First Men in the Moon, 1901; In The Days of the Comet, 1906; The World Set Free, 1914), James W. Griffiths pays tribute to the writer in this work of great cinematographic poetics.

    Based on Richard Corben’s comic book Terminated and featuring Luis Tosar, this short film shows how a village decides to take justice into its own hands when faced with a contagious epidemic disease: cholera.

    Featuring Ezter Balint (Stranger than Paradise) and Velvet Underground member John Cale, this short film takes us to the dark side of the Lewis Carroll classic. An Alice drops into a Wonderland of decadence and despair, represented by a New York of lost souls and charlatans selling broken dreams.

  • From Paper to Screen

    In this graduation project, graphic designer Thibault de Fournas reviews the evolution of typeface, from paper to the screen, in a poetic animation. Starting with possible variations in style, type and shape of letters on paper, Fournas goes on to summarise the history of typeface in the cinema, from static posters to the more artistic innovations introduced by Saul Bass.

    Filip is a writer who lives in a poor district. He dreams of glory and a life of luxury in a more prosperous part of town. One day, his neighbour Tereza, a prostitute, asks him to write her a letter for her fiancé. It would have ended well if she hadn’t knocked on his door again a week later to ask for another one. Short film based on a story by Maksim Gorky.

After leading one of the world’s biggest studios, Hoefler and Frere-Jones’ fonts include those of the Wall Street Journal and the US presidential campaign.

  • Alice in Wonderland (1903)

    Percy Stow and Cecil M. Hepworth / UK, 1903, 9’32’’, Original version

    Restored in 2010 by the British Film Institute, this is the first film adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s book. The narrative, with an aesthetic based on the drawings of Sir John Tenniel, the original illustrator of Carroll’s book, aims faithfully to relate the adventures of Alice as told by her author.

  • The History of Typography

    Ben Barrett-Forrest / Canada, 2013, 5’09’’, Catalan subtitles

    The paper cut-outs of this animated short film review the changes in type face throughout history, from Johannes Gutenberg’s Blackletter, through changes in the early serif font, with Caslon and Baskerville, to Futura and Helvetica, and typefaces generated by the introduction of computers.

  • Anna Blume

    Anna Blume is a visual poem about the desires of a man pursuing a woman. The story is like a surrealist journey dictated by the poet’s mind. Lust and ingestion, disguised as love, lead the two characters to a denouement in which love is a lonely, disquieting place. Based on and inspired by the love poem written in 1919, “An Anna Blume”, by Kurt Schwitters.
