Science-fiction in Catalan is starting to be populated with extraordinary authors, some because they hybridise, take risks, and become unavoidable narrative referents, others because they rescue a largely invisibilised tradition, and a few, moreover, because they are literally Extraordinàries (Males Herbes), a title which, with its female grammatical gender, draws attention to the first women’s anthology of Catalan science-fiction. The editor of the volume, Ricard Ruiz Garzón, speaks with Elisenda Solsona, Elena Bartomeu, Cristina Xifra, and Elena Polanco, four writers who work with the genre from different perspectives. We shall discuss what this irruption means, the new voices, forms, and themes by which it is sustained and, above all, why it has taken so long to appear, and what future awaits it in our literary world.
